We use both white(esthetic) composite fillings and silver(amalgam) fillings depending on the area of the mouth and the size of the filling. We always discuss the options with you.
White composite fillings have the advantage of matching the surrounding tooth structure. These fillings are bonded in place and cured with a light so that they are completely “set” when you leave the office. Sometimes you can have more temperature sensitivity after new composite fillings have been placed. This sensitivity typically improves in a couple of days and is gone in 6-8 weeks.
For larger fillings in the back of your mouth we often use silver(amalgam) fillings as they have less shrinkage and sensitivity. After amalgam fillings have been placed you have to avoid chewing on the side with the filling until the next day. It takes several hours for the filling to harden to its full strength.
